The coach training program has three related but separate
components:
| Annual Coach Meeting |
The Annual Coach Meeting takes place just prior
to the start of each season. It covers any FIFA or AYSO law or policy
changes and updates to the local Palo Alto program. |
| Safe Haven
certification |
Safe Haven teaches
general coaching and child specific
material, including AYSO philosophy and culture, child safety, team
management, injury preventation and volunteer protection. Safe Haven is
taught as a two hour evening class. This
class is mandatory for all head coaches, co-coaches and assistant
coaches. |
| Age-specific coach training | The age-specific training courses teach soccer techniques and principles of play that are appropriate for the given age group. Most importantly, they teach coaches how to teach the techniques. The age-specific coach training is taught on weekends at courses that vary in length from a half-day to two days, depending on the age level of the players that will be coached. |
AYSO has a goal of 100% coach certification.
Every coach and assistant coach must have the Safe Haven
certification and is strongly encouraged to attend the appropriate
age-specific training. Even if you are an experienced
soccer
player, you must attend the coach training in order to be covered by
the
Volunteer Protection Act. The Safe Haven and age-specific coach
training courses need only be taken once, although anyone is welcome to
re-attend to refresh their knowledge. Attendance at the Annual Coach
Meeting is mandatory for all coaches and assistant coaches
every year.
The meetings for coaches and assistant coaches will be held in the
Cafeteria at JLS Middle School.
There will be four Positive Coach Alliance sessions in the area. Coaches are encouraged to attend any one of the four sessions. The one in Palo Alto will be held at the JLS cafeteria at 7 PM. The date is Monday, September 10th.
The other PCA coach workshop is:
Saturday, September 22, 5-7PM, Los Altos Hills Town Hall.
Every coach must register as a volunteer in eAYSO every year. Go to http://www.eayso.org and login.
If you have never logged in before, click on First Time, followed by Next, followed by Next. You should now be on a page with three boxes. Click on either AYSO Volunteer or AYSO Youth Volunteer.
On the next screen, enter your first and last name as well as your home phone number and click Next. On the next page, enter in your email address and password and click on Next.
On the next page, click Find a Region. Enter your zip code and click Next. The next page should indicate that you are in Region 26. Click Next.
On the next page, you will enter your personal information. You MUST enter a social security number and a driver's license in order to proceed. No one outside of the person doing background checks will ever see these numbers. Without this, you CANNOT be a coach or assistant coach.
Once all of the data has been entered, send an email to stating that you have pre-registered as a volunteer. You will then receive an email (hopefully within 24 hours) with your AYSO ID number.
You need a AYSO ID number before you take this course.
Clinics are available for the different age groups.

These are not AYSO coach certification clinics, but they will teach useful training techniques that will make the season more productive and enjoyable for players and coaches.
Please send an email to the Regional Commissioner with the dates you will attend. This does not constitute a commitment, we just need to get a rough estimate so that I know how many instructors to get. Lunch will be served at the clinics for U10, U12 and U14 .
Balls and cones will be available for pickup from our soccer locker on Embarcadero Way across from the Palo Alto Airport on the following days:
The second day of ball pickup has been cancelled. Please contact Region Commissioner if you need.
