Tryouts for Spring Select

Parents of U8 to U19.  Announcing tryouts for Spring Select.

Typically our Spring Select program includes players in the top 10-15 percent skill level.  But not always. Enthusiasm and team spirit can count for a lot.

Spring Select is a great opportunity for kids who want to play more, train more, and engage in competition to test and better their soccer, team and leadership skills.

The teams form up and being practicing, often on a once a week schedule, in January and February, and then really kick off in late March.  The games are played up and down the peninsula, and the teams enter tournaments around the greater Bay Area, culminating in the Davis World Cup on Memorial Day weekend.  The Davis World Cup is a really fun time for all the players and parents.

Additionally, Spring Select hosts El Palo Alto, our very own tournament in late April, in which 64 teams from all over northern California come to compete right here in Palo Alto.

To play Spring Select, players attend tryouts.  Players from U9 to U19 tryout, and some older players from U8 may try out. We form teams in U10, U12, U14, U16 and U19.  For some of the divisions we form multiple teams, depending on the number of players.

Tryouts will be the last two Fridays of October at Greer Park.  The tryouts are now in the calendar on the home page, but do not provide much information yet.  The calendar will be updated mid-week with the rest of the information, once we have worked out the details.

Registration for tryouts this year will be online.  Players who make the tryouts will be invited to a team. Players who do not make the tryout will be placed into the Instructional program.  To register for a tryout, at least one parent must volunteer for a function at El Palo Alto.  At a minimum this may be a 2 hr Field Marshal slot, where you serve at the registration table to check teams in and help coordinate.  The likelihood that your slot is at the same time as your own child's game is low, and if it conflicts you can swap slots later.  The game schedule is typically not final until 2 weeks before the Tournament.

When you register your child for Spring Select tryouts you may pre-resgister for the season.  The full fee may be paid when your child is accepted to a team.  The fee covers field fees, league membership and tournament entry fees.  Anyone who pays the fee and is not selected onto a team will get a full refund.  The fee may be more than a team needs, in which case the balance not used will be refunded. Once a player is accepted and invited to a team you will have 48 hours to complete the registration and pay your fee.  Otherwise the slot will be offered to the next player in line from the tryouts.

Players should attend both tryouts, increasing their chances of being selected, and to be selected, players must attend 1 tryout.  Remember, enthusiasm and team play during tryouts count for a lot.
