Books and Videos for Self Study

Game experience and attending clinics are the best ways of improving your refereeing. But games and clinics aren't always available when you want them. Books and videos are. Books provide analysis and examples that help structure your Law knowledge. Videos provide that too, but also a wonderful opportunity to practice your eyes, as well as your head.

Two books that you should always have near at hand are the current editions of The Laws of the Game and the Palo Alto Regional Referee's Handbook. The Region will provide you with both of these. Beyond these, however, there is a wide choice of other materials. Collectively, they are quite expensive, and few referees who are not instructors have more than a couple of them. This is a great pity.

In order to make this material more widely available to local referees, Palo Alto AYSO has worked with the Palo Alto Library to stock the Palo Alto Main Library with a wide range of books and videos on soccer refereeing. This page describes the current holdings in enough detail to help you decide which one to check out next.

To find this material at the Library, look under call number 796.334, or search the catalog by topic ("soccer refereeing" or "soccer 'rules'") or by title or author.
