In the older age groups of AYSO, four free kicks on the edge of the penalty area will probably result in at least one goal, which could decide the game.
How can we learn about the diving player? Make an effort to spend time with an experienced coach or player. A good coach will be more than glad to have her players demonstrate the "evil art of diving". Attend your referee association meetings - the referees of your region should be familiar with players having this tendency. Go to games where there are reputed divers to get familiar with the tactic. Do be careful though not to prejudge players in games you referee.
[Editor's note: You can also check out the FIFA Gamesmanship videotape from the collection of referee materials in the Palo Alto Library. This tape shows several depressing (but instructive) examples of "diving" from the 1994 World Cup.]
We referees have a tendency to blow the whistle if a player falls, whether or not a foul has been committed. The players know which referees have this tendency, and some with unethical coaches will take advantage of us given the chance.
