Contestants
Coaches of teams competing in the tournament may nominate two players to compete in the Keeper Wars.  Coaches not competing in the tournament may nominate as many players as they wish for the Keeper Wars, up to and including all players on their team.

Registration and Check In
All contestants for the Keeper Wars, with their coach, must be registered and checked in at at the Tournament Table at least 30 minutes prior to the event. No exceptions.  For teams checking in for the Tournament early in the morning, It is recommended that you nominate your contestants at that time.  For coaches not competing in the tournament, it is recommended that you register you contestants at least an hour before the event.  All contestants must be wearing their AYSO uniform, shin guards and cleats.  Running shoes are permitted.

Contestants need to supercharge their energy for these games.  Cheering helps. 

Keeper Wars Overview

  • 1-on-1 single elimination bracket format.
  • Two opposing goal keepers attempt to score on each other in a two-minute match. The first player to score three goals, or the highest score at the end of two minutes, wins the match. If there is a tie, the match will continue until one player scores.
  • Each keeper must remain on their half of the "field".  If any part of their body crosses the center line that shot is discounted.
  • The ball may be thrown, punted, drop kicked, kicked, punched, headed or otherwise propelled.
  • Each keeper has 6 seconds to play from the time of possession.

Keeper Wars Format Details

Move the goals to straggling the touchline of the soccer pitch, such that the touchline is used as the center line of the keeper wars.   The area used for the Keeper Wars should be a lesser used area of the regular pitch, so as not to harm the pitch.  A few cones should be put out to mark the touchlines of the Keeper Wars pitch.  The goals should each be 10 yards from the centerline for U12 and 9 yards from the centerline for U10.  The cones should be about 5 yards wider than the goal width on each side.

There will be 2 contestants from each Tournament team plus an unknown number of contestants from the teams not in the Tournament.  To start, the contestants from each team go to the opposite side of the Keeper Wars pitch, dividing the total number of contestants evenly.  If there is an odd number of players, the odd player will play the next round as first in line.  The Usher will organize the keepers on the each side in first-name alphabetic order.  The time keeper will call for a match, and the ushers send in their player from the front of the queue to the goal on the right.  

The time keeper will throw in the ball to a keeper to start the game, alternating left and right starts for each game.  The keepers play their match.  The winner of the match remains in the elimination, the other player is eliminated.   The winner of the match returns to their usher and must wait for the next round in the elimination.

Once all the players from the initial queue have played, round 1 is completed.  Split the keepers between the two ushers, minimizing the number of keepers from the same team on the same side.

Conduct round 2 in the same manner as round 1.

Keep repeating this process until all are eliminated except the FInal Four.  Bring them to the center of the field and announce them as the Final Four.  Present a gift card to each of the final four.

Divide the Final Four into two groups with the first two in the alphabet on one side and the other two, opposite, and repeat another round, eliminating two, and then hold the championship round to determine the finalist.  Present the finalist and runner up gift card.

Return the goals to their regular position to resume the Tournament.
